The company had filed a letter with California’s Employment Development Department indicating it would lay off 145 workers on May 23 because the company that hired Ryder to move its merchandise was switching to a different provider.

In a second letter, dated May 1 and received Monday, Ryder informed the state it was pushing the date of termination to June 30. The reason for the extension, which now covers 142 workers, was “unexpected customer demands” by Ryder’s client.

Anne Hendricks, global corporate communications manager for the Miami, Fla.-based Ryder, declined to identify the customer, citing client confidentiality.
