Why the sinkhole on Gilman Springs Road? Fingers point to the squirrels

CHP – San Gorgonio Pass

7 hrs·

Gilman Springs Road Update - The contractor has completed the excavation and replaced the loose soil with 90 yards of concrete. Later this evening, the damaged area will be re-paved and striped. The roadway is scheduled to be fully open by tomorrow morning’s commute (approximately 5AM). The most likely cause of the sinkhole.....? Ground squirrels had burrowed from the dirt shoulder on the north side and under the roadway. With all the winter rains, water began to flow into the squirrel den and in time, out the other side of the road. Enough dirt was eventually washed away causing a cavern to be created under the eastbound lane. Bad squirrel.
