On August 31, 2018, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Inland Communications Center (ICC) began receiving 9-1-1 calls of a solo vehicle traffic collision on State Route 60 at Redlands Blvd. Riverside Area Units responded to the scene and discovered a white BMW 328I on its roof, blocking the westbound lanes. Preliminary investigation revealed the BMW, driven by Rafael Ramirez Espinoza, was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, Mr. Espinoza lost control and the BMW collided with the center divider guardrail, causing the BMW to overturn. Speed, alcohol and the lack of seatbelt usage are suspected factors in this collision.

As a result of the collision, Mr. Espinoza (21 year old/San Bernardino) and three of his passengers sustained fatal injuries. The right front passenger in the BMW survived and was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. The deceased passengers have been identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s office as Najera Perez Polo (21 years old/San Bernardino), Valentino Ramos (20 year old/San Bernardino) and Airyana Luna (20 year old/San Bernardino). Airyana Luna was 7 months pregnant and her unborn child did not survive the collision.

Witnesses interviewed at the scene advised that the driver of the BMW may have been engaged in a race just prior to the collision. The other vehicles involved in the race were described as a black, 2017-2018 Honda Civic and a hatchback Mazda. CHP Investigators are currently seeking witnesses with information pertaining to the collision and/or the race. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at 951-637-8000. Witnesses can remain anonymous.
