Fire in Badlands temporarily closes the freeway
The fire was touched off about 1:45 p.m. by a Caltrans tractor mower clearing brush, said the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said Caltrans is investigating the incident and will be able to comment further once more information is available.
Both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane were closed between Gilman Springs Road and Jack Rabbit Trail. By 5 p.m., both westbound lanes had reopened but both eastbound lanes remained closed, according to the California Highway Patrol log.
One eastbound lane reopened at 5:30 p.m., and the remaining closed lane reopened by 7:15 p.m.
The Land fire, which burned on both sides of the highway, charred 23 acres and was completely contained by 4:40 p.m., Cal Fire said.
No injuries or evacuations were reported.
