And just like that, the Lake Elsinore poppies are gone!
And they too, did pass.
The glorious California poppies that painted miles of hills along the 15 Freeway a blazing orange for weeks have wilted under the sizzling spring sun — and more than 90 percent of the flowers are gone.
When I visited them at the beginning of March, a park official told me they would only be around for a month and he was correct. The excessive heat is said to be the cause. I (Debra Craig) am so glad I visited them twice. They were truly amazing. The ranger also told me this type of superbloom is a rare occurrence in this area.
